Peek-a-Pooka

Many people would believe a socially awkward outcast is lonely.  However, in the winter play Harvey, the socially awkward hero has one faithful friend, a six-foot, three-and-one-inch tall “invisible” rabbit affectionately named Harvey.  Harvey is described as a pooka, which is a mischievous spirit in Irish folklore.  The main character, Elwood P. Dowd, played by Drew Straub, junior, proudly introduces Harvey to everyone he meets, to the embarrassment of his friends and family.  His sister, Veta, played by Annie Canfield, senior, is especially bothered by this as his behavior prevents her and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, played by Alyson McKie, sophomore, from climbing up the social ladder.  She makes a decision to place her brother in an insane asylum.  This unusual set of events controls the rest of the show, creating an interesting and comedic atmosphere.

In contrast to the fall musical, Harvey’s cast is small, with only twelve acting members.  The cast has grown closer as a result.

“[The cast size] has made everyone know each other and interact more than they would in a larger cast.  We have lots of jokes together and it helps us form good friendships,” said McKie.

“Memorizing lines is probably the hardest part.  But figuring out the way to say lines is also pretty difficult,” said Harrison Farmer, junior, who plays Dr. Sanderson, one of the doctors at the sanitarium.

To discover what happens to Elwood, his friend Harvey, and their family, come see the show on Friday, February 28th or Saturday, March 1st at 7:00pm.
