The Ultimate Choice: Christian or Secular
There are countless ways for Christians to worship God, and one of the most common is through music. Classic religious music and age-old hymns closely transcribed from the messages represented in the Bible are most often pertinent, genuine, and theologically accurate. However, the Christian music that is produced today and commonly circulated by contemporary Christian radio stations often misses the mark of providing original music while conveying messages relevant to the Christian community.
Often, much of Christian music seems to follow the same musical patterns from song to song. Many of the songs played today are so repetitive that they are barely discernable from each other. While the content of a song is arguably more important than its sound, worn-out chords and melodies neither excite interest nor demand attention from listeners.
Unfortunately, the content of many Christian songs seems to follow suit. They drive at the same messages until they are worn to exhaustion, resulting in a significant loss of meaning for the listener. Since select topics receive attention, messages applicable only to a portion of the listener demographic are often played.
Furthermore, the constant repetition of melodies and ideas can be a turnoff for listeners simply because it makes the overall message seem contrived. A listener who feels as if each song has been copied and pasted from the last is unlikely think that such unoriginal themes are genuine. This is a poor representation of God’s Word, which is wholly true and honest.
Thankfully, this isn’t the case with all Christian music. Artists who step outside the sphere of typical religious music and develop their own sound are more likely to express new messages in a new way. I encourage you to develop your own taste in Christian music by looking into artists who assimilate your favorite musical genres. From rap, to pop, to rock – unique artists represent them all while spreading the message of the gospel.
