Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been a staple for Westminster and tons of other highschools alike for quite some time all around America…but what exactly is FCA?
Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a non-profit organization that seeks to unite and empower highschool and college athletes to make an impact on society whilst spreading the word of God. FCA was founded in 1952 by Don McClanen out of Kansas City.
FCA is established in high schools all over the country and the world, with over 87,575 members across the country, and is steadily growing more and more through the years.
An FCA “huddle” can be broken up into three categories: An individual team huddle, a multi-sport huddle, and a coaches huddle. Here at Westminster’s chapter, it is a multi-sport huddle.
FCA has been a fan favorite at WCA since its formation a couple years ago. There are five leaders who run the meetings. Meetings are every Tuesday and are typically either held at a leaders house or the school.
Izzy Russell, senior FCA leader, elaborates on the meetings: “It’s a meeting every Tuesday where all the athletes get together at someone’s and have dinner and hang out and then do a small devotion that has to do with god and sports.”
Meetings are equally split with spending time with other athletes playing games, doing other activities, and having meaningful devotions.
“It’s a great way to connect with other athletes and have a community of athletes at WCA. It also gives practical ways to honor god in sports and learn how to put him first in what we do” says Russell.
Not only is FCA continuing to grow in popularity at Westminster, but all over America. Its Christian foundation appeals to all kinds of athletes, from both public and Christian schools alike.
Katie Shoemaker, senior FCA leaders, states: “FCA gives students an opportunity to learn what it’s like to incorporate God into their sport and really how to follow God even in the midst of everything going on as a high schooler”
FCA has proven to be a hit at highschools and colleges all across the country. It continues to unify athletes from all kinds of sports with the word of God and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come.
