Students and Teachers Visit China to Set Up Relations with a Sister School
As a summer seminar first, seven students and two teachers embarked on an international journey that led them to Guangzhou, China. The team included juniors Katherine Galvin, Kaitlyn Melhouse, and Brennan Murphy and seniors Baxter Estes, Cierra Peters, Ethan Finn, and Chrissy Talent.
“At first, I was hesitant about traveling with such a small group, some of whom I did not know. But after spending fourteen hours on a plane with someone you become friends fast,” said Melhouse.
In the morning, the world-travelers taught a VBS to children at an international school. The theme of the VBS was Babylon and the kids were divided into different tribes where they learned from their American leaders.
“Teaching the kids was a great experience,” said Galvin.
Around 70 kids attended the VBS and were given the opportunity to hear about God while having fun with some cool American kids. However, the children were not the only ones who were blessed by this experience. The WCA students were equally, if not more, touched by the sweet, lovable children.
“The kids were not only sweet, but also incredibly smart,” said Melhouse.
In the afternoon, the WCA students taught an English camp. The kids who attended the VBS also attended the English camp since it was in the same location and since they loved their American friends so much.
During free time, the globetrotters had the opportunity to see the beautiful country of China firsthand. They were awed by the beauty of the Canton tower after visiting. Another important part of free time was bonding with one another.
While in China, students experienced a new culture and made friendships with the children that will last forever. The China trip equipped students with important travelling skills and gave them a taste of authentic Chinese culture.
