This past Tuesday, October 1st, the Wildcat Softball team hosted their senior night versus Lutheran St. Charles. The Wildcats celebrated 6 seniors during this game all of them being in the starting lineup.
The Cats got things going with sophomore Jaymison Lenk pitching for the Cats. Jaymison has been considered the ace of the team and has been extremely successful during her freshman year and into the start of her sophomore year. Jaymison started off strong racking up a few strikeouts and minimized hits only allowing 3 runs through 4 innings of work.
On the offensive side of things the cats found heat in the 3rd inning putting up 6 runs and stayed consistent throughout the game. Senior St. Louis University commit, Allie Branstetter demonstrated textbook hitting driving in 2 runs on a single to left field. She also demonstrated exceptional defense, throwing out a runner from center field. Allie would later be named 800 sportings player of the game.
Towards the back half of the game, Lutheran St. Charles started to find their offensive groove tallying 4 runs in the 5th inning and 4 more in the 6th inning. With ace Jaymison lenk off the mound, they were able to get some momentum going.
Although at one point the Wildcats were up 6-3, the score had raised to 8-12 in favor of Lutheran St. Charles. The cats had their work to do and they raised to the occasion. They responded to this by putting ace Jaymison Lenk back in the game on the mound despite her not feeling 100% and also got the bats hot again. This was a major success for the Cats and they got action going in the final innings.
When asked about going back into pitch, sophomore Jaymison Lenk said, “I was excited to get back on the rubber, I knew I could take back control of this game and was eager to do so.”
With the bottom of the 7th inning starting the cats were down 11-12 needing 2 runs to finish the game on a positive note. And that they did! They wildcats got many baserunners on and secured the walk off win. The big moment came from Senior Allie Branstetter hitting an opposite field line drive into the left center gap.
With not better way to celebrate a senior night win, the cats finished the game 13-12. “I could have asked for a better game, this has been one of my favorite moments of the season so far and I can’t wait to compete in districts!” Said Senior outfielder Izzy Russel.
The cats continue their season Thursday October 3rd against Notre Dame Highschool. The Wildcat Softball team’s record is now 16-8.
