After winning the Founder’s Cup last year, the Westminster hockey team is picking up right where they left off. With high attendance, seven seniors, familiar coaches, and high hopes for the upcoming seasons, Westminster hockey is back.
The only sport where half the team doesn’t attend Westminster, yet draws sizable crowds at 8 PM on a Tuesday in Arnold. The seniors are Logan Swenson, Joey Morici, John Schweppe, Cody Kilgore, Aidan Irby, Mason Fricke, and Monica Knapp. All seven share the same excitement for the season and are encouraged by the underclassmen.
When talking to Logan Swenson, Senior, he said “The team is looking way better than last year already and we’re looking to get some AAA kids for next year. We also have a couple freshmen who are developing quickly and should be important pieces for their time on the ice.”
Logan is also happy about keeping his coaches from last year in head coach Dean Penberthy, and Ray Knapp. He feels that they have put in the work alongside the rest of the team to build a better team for this year, and to create lasting success for Westminster Hockey.
Currently at 4-3-1, already having more wins than last season, the work the team has put in is clearly paying off. Averaging a hair over 3 goals a game and goalies Aidan Albers, David Creel, and Jarrod Taylor saving over 85% of shots on net, the team is a legitimate threat. Moving from the Suburban Conference up to the more competitive Central Conference, the hockey team has proven that was a needed step up. As the season progresses and we look forward to a playoff berth, the hockey team continues to win and prepare the future of Westminster hockey.
