The Wildcats stayed hot on Saturday, September 30th beating the Lutheran South Lancers 49-6. after a devastating 42-28 loss last season. Devin Coulter, senior, said that the team “took [last year’s loss] personally.” Coulter explained, “Even before the game we were talking about how [these guys] beat us last year, so let’s take it personally that they think they can even come on this field and play against us.”
The Cats played well on both sides of the ball, with their first score coming late in the first quarter on a 10 yard rushing touchdown from Chris Heard, senior. The Wildcats kept the pressure going on offense, scoring 5 times in the second quarter. Will Powers, freshman, exploded, throwing 14 completions for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Powers alternated drives with Shep Nye, senior, who threw for a touchdown of his own. The pair of quarterbacks spread the ball around more than they had the whole season, completing passes to nine different receivers, with Coulter finishing the game with 30 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Coulter, in his first year playing high school football, leads the team in receiving touchdowns with three.
The defense was a similar story, allowing no points until the final seconds of the game, when Ben Long, Junior, brought the Lancers their first touchdown on a 10 yard run. The Cats also scored a defensive touchdown in the second quarter when Peter Kats, junior, returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown.
This is the Wildcats’ second win in a row, after a rocky 0-4 start to the season. When asked about this newfound success, Cory Snyder, Head Football Coach, said: “The guys have done a good job of executing their assignments on offense and defense and making plays. Our first four weeks were against tough opponents that really challenged us and I believe that the success of the last two weeks is largely a result of the growth that we experienced during that time.”
The Wildcat’s Homecoming game is against John Burroughs at home this Saturday, October 7th, at noon. The Wildcats (2-4) take on The Bombers, (3-3) in what could end up a very exciting game. They look to advance their win streak to three games.
