“I wasn’t really nervous playing my first highschool game ever on varsity, mostly because half of the girls on the court were also freshman,” said Emory Freesmeier, freshman varsity volleyball starter.
While no one can replace the six foot, division one, beast of a right side Alli Bishop, this year’s incoming freshman class has great capabilities to emerge as a weapon of their own. Twenty one new incoming freshman, four of which made the varsity squad, have the talent and dedication to make a significant impact on the court.
Ben Briney, head coach, and his two senior captains, Lexi Frazier and Genna Selk will hopefully lead these young bloods to a three-peat state championship. “Our role this year is obviously important athletically but I would say just as much being leaders off the court because of how many younger girls are on the team,” said Lexi Frazier, senior captain, remarking on the upcoming season.
In addition to losing eight starting seniors, the volleyball team has also been moved into class five, the highest class in the state which includes traditional powers including Lafayette and St. Dominic.
While the outlooks and statistics are not in their favor, Coach Briney comments on his optimism regarding the wave of youth influence on the team: “We are not good enough YET. This is a new season and a new team. The key word though, is yet.”
