More than Just a Team: Girls’ Swimming Preview
November 13, 2019
The girls swim team is poised for another big year. With many returners who have a history of success, the team has high hopes for the upcoming season.
“We should be able to give all our opponents hard fought competition. I am hopeful that we can place all the relays and a few individuals to the state meet,” said Kent Kehr, head coach of the Wildcats.
Some of these individuals who competed at state last year are now seniors, including: Lauren Zone, Grace Skiljan, Camryn McMurry, Hope Burkey, Kyleigh Peer and of course, junior Margo O’Meara. These swimmers, along with some others, hope to make a run at state once again this season.
Two-time state diving champion O’Meara returns this year to go for her third straight individual championship. Last year, she took over the state meet and won handily. O’Meara also qualified for the state meet in some swimming events.
While winning is important, Coach Kehr says the team has other priorities as well. “We want to develop the swimmer/diver skills and compete at a high level. Most importantly, though, is to have a great team chemistry built on honoring Christ and developing the godly character traits that will have an impact on those around us now and even after the swim season,” he said.
For example, senior Lauren Zone says that the team will have devotions every Wednesday led by the seniors. “We will talk about how we can glorify God through our actions in and out of the pool. We hope that everyone on the swim team will honor God by having good sportsmanship, having a positive attitude no matter what, by cheering each other on, and through giving it our all in the pool.”
Overall, the swim team is prepared to have a successful year through hard work and most importantly honoring God in everything they do.
