With an Overtime Victory at St. Charles West, Boys Soccer is Heating Up at Just the Right Time
The boys soccer team had a great week as they went 2-0 and were awarded some local recognition. With district play starting in under two weeks, the Wildcats are keeping up the intensity and have put together quite the season.
It started Tuesday night, Oct. 22, as they traveled down to Lutheran South to play a conference foe. Goals were abundant for the Wildcats with five different goal scorers. Senior Danny Sacco opened up the scoring, followed by fellow senior Trent Grass with his first varsity goal on a header from a Mark Stump cross. Another first goal came from freshman star Tyler Hott, who scored his first career goal on a penalty kick. Junior Luke Laughlin then added another goal to his impressive season. The scoring was rounded out with a goal from junior Andy-Joice Monga. In all, the Wildcats dominated the Lancers en route to a 5-0 win.
Some more good news came in on Wednesday as the team was ranked 10th in the weekly small school power rankings by STLhighschoolsports.com. The team had been on the bubble in weeks prior but cracked the list for the first time in a few years.
Later that day, the team went to play under the lights at St. Charles West. Backup-goaltender-turned-forward Lincoln Chimento was not at the game, forcing Coach Legters to put Sacco in at attack and leave Hott in at midfield. In his new position, Sacco yet again opened up the scoring in the first few minutes with an assist from sophomore Caleb Legters. The Warriors tied it up, and the scoreboard read 1-1 at halftime. Hott got another PK and securely placed it in the back of the net, but the Warriors followed with another goal to make it 2-2. Time ran out on the clock and the sudden-death overtime period started. With one minute left, Sacco got the golden goal on a rebound and ended the game a few seconds early.
The team is 14-6 in all competitions, good enough to secure the number two seed in a district of four teams. The team will be playing Parkway Central in the first round, and should they move on, they will face top-seeded Rockwood Summit, the top-ranked large school in the area. How a team that is the top large school is in a district with teams that are in the small school district is a little confusing. But to be the best, you have to beat the best, and this team has plenty of soccer left to play.
The final home game of the year is next Wednesday, Oct. 30 against Lindbergh before district play begins Nov. 5.
