Wildcats Open Up the Field Hockey Postseason with a 4-0 Victory Over Pattonville
The field hockey team entered the postseason on Tuesday, Oct. 22 as they played Pattonville in the first round. Although neither team had too much success throughout the course of the year, one team looked dominant. The Wildcats had beaten the Pirates by a score of 2-0 a few weeks ago on Senior Night in one of 18 losses the Pirates had coming into the game. Whichever team would end up on the losing side of this postseason game would see their season come to an end.
The Wildcats felt the pressure but remained calm as the game began. The game was primarily controlled by the good guys for most of the first half, but a scoreless draw showed on the scoreboard.
Coach Schmer, along with managers, Jack Bystrom and Koby Schmer, lit a fire under the team with a great message involving current rap lyrics during halftime. The impact would be seen immediately as the Wildcats came within inches of scoring in the opening moments of the second half.
The offense woke up with a goal from seniors Ava Bidner and Alyssa Legters with 21 minutes remaining in the half. Not even a minute later, senior Ava Bidner rifled one past the goalie to double the lead. It was a rare sight to see Pattonville move the ball past midfield in the second half. The Cats dominated possession and were attacking with much ferocity, accumulating 15 corners and 17 shots.
Bidner scored once more, and then sophomore KK Pruett scored again for the Wildcats. The game was sealed 4-0, a shutout for goalie Sabrina Granata, and the Wildcats moved on.
Now they have a rematch with Parkway West, who beat the Wildcats 2-0 a few weeks back. What better time than now to get revenge. It is do or die time, and the Wildcats have it in them to go far should they play as they did against the Pirates. The sky’s the limit, so buckle up because the Wildcats could be on this wagon for a while.
