Hail Marys and Heartbreaks
There are six seconds on the clock, Liberty leads 28-21. Lane Davis escapes pressure and rolls out to his right. The ball is released and time stands still. On its way down, the ball goes through the arms of the defender and lands gently into the hands of Tommy Briner in the end zone. Instant chaos ensues for all spectators looking on. Pure joy is felt by the whole Westminster community in this Friday night football game.
Looking back at the last three years, I have never had a better time at a game where I was not playing than Friday night. Although the outcome was not what we wanted in the end, it was something that I will always remember fondly. I will remember what my peers were able to do.
It was amazing to see Lane Davis playing healthy and showing what he can do on a football field. He led the team down the field with big throws when it mattered most. For someone that has been through so much, it was awesome to see Lane have his moment under the lights.
It was amazing to see Tommy Briner catch two touchdown passes in the final three minutes of the game. For someone that has never played football before this year, it is crazy to think that he caught the ball on one of the biggest plays in one of the most exciting games in Westminster history.
It was amazing to see Ben Hicks beating defenders down the field consistently and making multiple big plays. Playing just about every snap of the game, he has an impact on every play. Always giving full effort and doing all he could to receive the ball. With running back LJ Minner and receiver/safety Ben Parres out for the game, multiple players were needed to fill the void.
It was amazing to see Ben Straub be a force on both sides of the ball as one of the games leading tacklers, rushers, and receivers. He showed the quickness and agility to evade defenders on offense and bring the ball carrier down while playing safety.
It was amazing to see Aiden Davitt lead the defensive line to keep the pressure on all night and forcing a key turnover in the fourth quarter that helped give the momentum to the Wildcats.
It was amazing to see Toby Davidson step up and play center on the offensive line as well as dominate in his natural linebacker position. Davidson also recovered a fumble in the middle of the Wildcat comeback.
Overall, it was a near storybook night where we all got to see our classmates play for their God, their school, and each other. The game brought everyone together and every person in attendance was invested in the team and the school. The team never gave up, no matter how unlikely a comeback looked at times.
So going forward, it is unlikely anything this year will top that moment, and I am fine with that. It was a moment of the traditional high school experience that we all get a few chances to see every year. I cannot remember anything from Geometry or Physics, but I will never forget this.
