Varsity Soccer Loses Hard Fought Battle to Parkway West
The Varsity Soccer team dropped a close game under the lights at Parkway West.
The Longhorns opened the scoring only eight minutes into the game, giving them a 1-0 lead early. After the early goal, the Wildcats settled in and began to play with much more assurance and aggression. Play was back and forth for much of the first half, with Westminster retaining the majority of possession. With just six minutes before halftime, Sam Hunsicker, Senior, scored for the Wildcats on a nice shot past the goalie. The half ended soon after with the score deadlocked at 1-1.
With new found confidence, Westminster started the second half at a breakneck pace, launching attacks and wreaking havoc on the Longhorn back line. Despite the tenacity, scoring would not come until about twenty minutes into the second half when Erik Bergman, Sophomore, scored what is quite possibly going to be the goal of the year to make it 2-1. Bergman took aim on a low bouncing ball at the top of the box, and perfectly volleyed a brilliant strike with the outside of his foot, curling it into the upper ninety of the goal. As the Westminster team and fans went wild over such an incredible goal, the spirits of the Parkway West players began to diminish. But the game pressed on. The last fifteen minutes were some of the most physical of the game, ultimately leading to a Longhorn equaliser that just barely squeaked past the diving Wildcat goaltender, Junior Brandon Beat. After playing just two minutes of the score being tied at 2-2, Parkway West again scored, this time for good to put the game away out of reach at 3-2.
It was a hard fought, back and forth battle between two rival teams that will certainly make for an exciting rematch come time for the District tournament. The Wildcats next game is Tuesday at home against Rockwood Summit at 4:15 as they look to build upon an exciting start to the season.
