Field Hockey Comes to WCA
Westminster is beginning a new chapter in its sports history with the start of a new girls Field Hockey team. As of now, the sport will be an introductory program, open for all girls from 7th through 12th grade. Since it is an intro program, any girl can try it out and see if they like it.
Without it being a school sport, Field hockey will need support to get it off the ground.
“Our goal for this year is to introduce field hockey to the WCA community to generate enough interest and excitement to add it as a Varsity, JV, and middle school sport in the near future.” said Nancy Schmer, WCA parent and coach of the field hockey program.
The team will be practicing from early September to the middle of October.
“Field Hockey is a MSHAA (Missouri State High school Activity Association) sponsored sport and will be a Fall sport.” said Todd Zell, sports director at WCA.
One problem that is facing the field hockey team is numbers. The team will need many players from both the upper school and the middle school if the sport wants to become school supported. The players and coaches are asking for anyone who is interested to give it a try.
“People should join the field hockey team because it’s fun and easy to pick up.” said Anna Huynh, sophomore and member of the field hockey team.
According to Westminster’s sport policy, if a girls sport is added, a boys sport will also be added in response.
“We will not be adding a boys sport at this time.” said Todd Zell.
If the new field hockey program grows from a club to a school funded sport, the issue of adding a new boys sport may rise again.
