Before the season started, the tennis team received some bad news. MICDS, one of the top teams in the state of Missouri, would once again be in the same district as Westminster. In previous years, Westminster and MICDS have had some very competitive match ups as two of the best high school teams in the state, and this year will be no different.
Westminster has 4 of their top 6 tennis players returning from last year’s team that lost in the district finals to MICDS. Bailey Merkel, junior, Derek Bell, junior, Hunter Hughes, senior and Nathan Arnold, senior, the top 4 from last year’s team, all hope to break through this year and revenge their post season woes.
“As a team this year we hope to upset MICDS and make another run to state,” said Bailey Merkel, junior.
This year the team will also be picking up another solid top 6 player from the freshmen class. Andrew Montgomery hopes to help this team in their run for a district title and possibly more.
“This year I hope to encourage my teammates and ultimately make the team better as a whole,” said Montgomery.
While the team is looking forward to another winning season with great matches, the tennis team has become more than just playing matches for many of its players.
“This year I want to make sure that the season is enjoyable and the team gets to know each other better,” said Hughes.
The first match of the year will come against CBC on March 26. The team hopes to get off to a great start and carry their momentum throughout the season and into the post season for a likely match against MICDS in the district finals.
