The Freshman basketball team had a historic year. They finished the season as the first basketball team in WCA history to go undefeated. Lead by stars Jack Andrews, Jordan Hawkins, and Nick Cacciarelli, the freshmen destroyed every team they faced, beating opponents by an average of over 15 points a game.
The team’s strength was in its up tempo offence and tenacious defense. While the Cats scored more than 50 points on 8 occasions, their opponents scored more than 40 only once.
Another positive was that every team member contributed. Nick Cacciarelli lead the team in scoring at point guard. However, his best plays of the season came against fellow teammate Joel Johnson, which left everyone in the organization puzzled. Jack Andrews played harder than anyone on the floor, as his hard-nosed play embodied the Wildcats spirit and determination. He was injured on multiple occasions and it was on these occasions that the Cats came closest to losing. Jordan Hawkins added excitement and energy to the team’s offense. Zack Hughes, Connor Hafenrichter, and Paul Griesedieck were dominating inside all year. They all scored and rebounded with tenacity. Logan McCall provided a balanced offensive and defensive game, which was essential to the team’s starting lineup. Sam Kottmeier was the team’s best defender, guarding players much bigger and faster than him with ease. Joel Johnson was excellent in the clutch. His late threes lifted the Cats to their first win over Priory, their closest game of the year. Sam Hunsicker and Zach Shultz were the teams three point specialists. Min Sok Lee was a key big body who had a couple of big games. And John Pottebaum, well he didn’t do much at all. He was kept the squad’s spirits up even in the face of adversity. This year’s team was special. It will be exciting to watch them grow and develop through the years.
