The basketball season started out with high hopes. Last year’s team had lost at the buzzer to a talented U. City team in the finals of districts with a trip to the final sixteen on the line. This year’s team hoped to take the next step and build on their great 22-5 season last year, but the season did not go as planned.
The season started out great with Westminster winning two of three games in their first round robin tournament and taking fourth in the challenging annual MICDS tournament, building them up to look like a real threat in the post season.
While the team was still 12-7 at the end of January, the season took a turn for the worse. The Wildcats went on a five game losing streak putting the team at 12-12, with districts coming up quickly.
The team rallied and picked up their last two regular season wins over Duchesne and Priory giving them a winning record before districts. With this momentum, Westminster wiped out Priory for the second time in 4 days, but Westminster had to face a talented Clayton squad in the next round. The game went back and forth with great play after great play, but unfortunately for Westminster the season ended as Clayton won the game 77-66.
While the basketball team hoped for a better showing this season as a team, there were many individual performances this season that will not be forgotten. Jack Dohr and John Eric lead the team as seniors and put up great performances to keep Westminster relevant throughout the season. Dohr averaged a team high 13.9 points and Eric averaged 12.5 points per game.
Next year’s team will lose four talented seniors, but with a JV team that went 20-3 and a freshmen team that went undefeated the future looks bright for Westminster basketball.
