Following a lousy 2 win season last year, the Westminster Wildcats have opened the 2012 campaign with a perfect 4-0 record, as they rolled over Lutheran South 31-6 last Friday night. After going down 6-0 early, the Cats stormed back with 31 unanswered points, dominating the game on both sides of the ball. Junior quarterback, Brett Bond, starred, completing 11-21 passes for 283 yards.
The biggest completion went to fellow junior, Kyle Kinner, a 90 yard bomb that ended the scoring in the fourth quarter. Kinner finished the game with 5 catches for 188 yards. He’s now 4th in the league with 433 receiving yards, and also has a whopping 25.5 yards per catch.
“He has great hands and is my go-to guy,” said Bond of the star wideout on stltoday.com. “When I need somebody to make a play he can do it.”
The defense also shined. The Lancers had constant chances in the red zone, but could never capitalize on Wildcat miscues. Bond fumbled on the Wildcat 30 to open the second half, but the Lancers could only push it to the 19 before attempting a blocked field goal. Another made field goal was brought back after an illegal motion penalty, then blocked on the retry.
“We marched the ball down there two or three times, but we couldn’t get it in the end zone,” said Chuck Faucette, Lutheran South football coach, in an article on stltoday.com.
The win pushed Westminster to 8th in area rankings. The Cats host a struggling Priory team next Saturday, before welcoming #2 Burroughs in what should be their toughest test of the year. This upcoming stretch is crucial if they want to continue their breakout year.
During the week, Wildcats and Lutheran South fans alike had voted for the game on Friday to be the Rams Game of the Week. Sponsored by the Saint Louis Rams, Charter, and 590 the fan radio, the winners of the contest received a live, one hour pregame show on 590, and the game was to be broadcasted live. In addition, Westminster received a $2,000 reward for winning the game and head coach Cory Snyder was named the coach of the week. It is undecided what the money will be put towards.
During halftime, there was a friendly taco toss that spiraled into disaster. Wildcat cheerleaders threw tacos into the Westminster student section at the request of The Blue Crew. But instead of being consumed, the tacos were flung about the stands creating a horrid mess. Security got involved, and threw out Parker Briden and Hunter Hughes, seniors, who took full responsibility for the debacle. Taco tosses shall not be featured at Wildcat games in the future.
